I was born in a small village in Western Kenya, where everyone knows everyone  and jealousy spreads faster than news. From a young age, I always dreamt of becoming something bigger than the poverty that surrounded us. But in my village, dreaming is like committing a sin. People don’t like to see someone trying to rise.

After finishing campus, I returned home to look for opportunities, but all I got were sneers and whispers. “Huyo anaringa,” they’d say. “Atarudi hapa alime kama sisi.” Those words pierced deeper than any knife. My own relatives began avoiding me. Whenever I tried to start a business, it would fail mysteriously. If I got a job interview, something would go wrong at the last minute.
