New Green Number Plates: What They Are & How to Apply and Get Yours
Kenya has taken a bold step toward cleaner transport with the introduction of distinctive green number plates exclusively for electric vehicles (EVs).
The unveiling happened on 3 February 2026 when the Ministry of Transport, led by Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir, officially launched the new system as part of the country’s broader push toward sustainable transport under the National Electric Mobility Policy.
What Are Green Number Plates?
The new number plates are easily recognisable by their green reflective background, setting electric vehicles apart from traditional petrol or diesel-powered cars. They act as a visual signal that a vehicle is zero-emission, helping policymakers, motorists, and enforcement agencies identify EVs quickly on Kenyan roads.
According to the government, these plates are meant to highlight Kenya’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and promoting cleaner technologies. The green plates are now the official identifier for all categories of electric vehicles, from cars to motorcycles, and are intended to support broader climate goals, including a 32% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.
Why the Change?
The switch to green plates is part of a wider national strategy to accelerate electric mobility. By making EVs more visible on the roads, the government hopes to spur greater adoption of clean transport, reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels, and help tackle air pollution and climate change.
Transport CS Chirchir highlighted that EVs not only contribute less to pollution but also offer long-term cost savings to motorists due to lower fuel and maintenance costs. He encouraged drivers to consider the switch to electric vehicles as Kenya modernises its transport sector.
Who Must Switch to Green Plates?
All electric vehicles currently operating in Kenya are now expected to transition to the new green plates.
This includes:
Fully electric cars
Electric motorcycles
Electric boda bodas (motorcycle taxis)
Other EVs irrespective of category
The directive applies immediately, meaning owners of electric vehicles are advised to update their number plates as soon as possible.
How to Obtain the New Green Number Plates in Kenya
If you own an electric vehicle in Kenya and need to switch to the new green plates, here’s how to go about it:
- Gather Your Vehicle Documents
Ensure you have all required documentation for vehicle registration, such as your logbook, ID, and proof of EV status.
- Contact the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA)
Get in touch with the NTSA, which is responsible for vehicle registration and number plate issuance. They will provide guidance on the specific forms and procedures to apply for the green plates.
- Submit an Application
Submit your application with the NTSA — this may be in person at NTSA offices or through selected agencies as directed by the authority.
- Pay Applicable Fees
Vehicle owners are expected to pay a nominal fee for production and issuance of new plates (reported to cost around KSh 3,000), though this may vary based on official NTSA pricing.
- Receive the Green Number Plates and Fit the Plates
Once approved, you will be issued the new green reflective plates, which must be fitted to both the front and rear of the vehicle.
What About Incentives?
While the green plate itself doesn’t automatically grant specific perks, government officials have hinted that the initiative could pave the way for future incentives, such as access to priority lanes, reduced tolls, or tax breaks, as part of efforts to encourage EV adoption.
