For Grace Achieng’ from Kisumu, Kenya, marriage was supposed to be a partnership, a safe place where love and support flowed freely. But with her husband, Patrick, she discovered a cruel and confusing reality. Patrick never provided anything for the household. Groceries, school fees, rent, and medical bills were all Grace’s responsibility. He claimed responsibility in words—he paid bills on time, organized things—but he never actually contributed financially or materially to the family.
“It was exhausting,” Grace says.
