The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) is basically an organization or you can say an agency that gives loans, bursaries and scholarships to students who are studying or training at any public institutions in Kenya.
Back in 1952 the colonial government in Kenya used to award loans under the then Higher Education Loans Fund (HELF) to Kenyan students who were pursuing university education in universities that are outside East Africa.
These included, Britain, United States of America, India and South Africa.
That’s where the government of Kenya adopted the idea of giving its students loans to continue learning in government institutions. This also encourages students to join public schools because of the added advantage.
