This article discusses the burial fees at Lang’ata Cemetery, one of Kenya’s largest public burial sites, managed by the County Government of Nairobi.

Situated on a 120-acre plot along Lang’ata Road, about 7km west of Nairobi CBD, the cemetery hosts over 1,500 deceased individuals from various backgrounds.

Every day, numerous individuals visit the cemetery to bid farewell to their loved ones.

Many opt for Lang’ata Cemetery due to financial constraints or lack of rural homes.

The cemetery reached full capacity over 2 decades ago, leading to the practice of burying on top of existing graves. Despite government efforts to relocate the cemetery, challenges have hindered such plans.

Given space limitations, the Nairobi County Government promotes cremation, costing Kshs 16,500 for adults and Kshs 12,000 for children. Cremation involves exposing the body to intense heat in a specially designed furnace.

Lang’ata Cemetery offers two types of graves: permanent and temporary. Permanent graves, with a lease period of 99 years, allow multiple burials.

Charges vary based on location and citizenship status. Temporary graves, shallow and reusable after 10-15 years, offer a more affordable option with fixed charges for adults and children.

Permanent Graves:

• Adults from Nairobi County: Ksh 30,500
• Adults from outside Nairobi County: Ksh 40,000
• Foreigners: Ksh 50,000
• Children: Ksh 4,000
• Infants: Ksh 2,000

Temporary Graves:

• Adults: Ksh 7,000
• Children: Ksh 4,000
